Teeth whitening performed by a dentist is a safe, effective way to lift stains and brighten your smile. Importantly, only registered dental professionals are permitted to use higher-strength whitening products — the Australian Dental Association specifically advises against whitening performed by unregulated providers, such as beauty salons, as it can put patients at risk of harm. At MHP Dental, your whitening is assessed and supervised by a qualified dentist from start to finish.

In-chair vs take-home whitening

There are two main ways to whiten your teeth: in-chair, or with a take-home kit.

In-chair whitening gives you same-day results — you’ll leave the practice with visibly whiter teeth. It’s a great option if you want results quickly, for example ahead of a special occasion.

Take-home whitening involves wearing custom-fitted trays with a hydrogen peroxide gel for around 1 hour a day, over 14 days. Based on the research and our clinical experience, take-home whitening tends to deliver a better and longer-lasting result than in-chair treatment, generally with less sensitivity. It also gives you the flexibility to top up your results whenever you like, at very little ongoing cost.

What to expect

Some temporary sensitivity is common after whitening, particularly in the days following treatment — this is normal and generally settles on its own. Let us know if you have any concerns and we can advise on how to manage it.

Setting the right expectations

Everyone’s teeth start from a different shade, so results will vary from person to person — some people will see a bigger change than others, depending on their starting point. Teeth whitening will brighten, whiten and add lustre to your natural teeth — but it won’t replicate the very white, uniform look of a crown or veneer. If you’re after that kind of dramatic transformation, whitening alone won’t get you there, and we’re happy to talk through other options that might be a better fit for your goals.
