Children’s Dentistry
Caring for your child’s smile from the very first tooth
For almost 30 years, MHP Dental has been helping families in the Macquarie Park community look after their children’s oral health — in a relaxed, friendly environment where kids feel comfortable rather than anxious.
Our approach: education and prevention first
Education and prevention sit at the core of how we treat children. With the right habits in place early, most kids will never need major dental work.
- Brushing and diet make the biggest difference — read our blog for age-specific tips on both.
- 6-monthly check-ups are strongly recommended for children. A child’s mouth can change quickly, and regular visits catch issues early — while also helping your child see the dentist as a normal, routine part of healthcare, rather than something to fear.
Why early orthodontic assessment matters
As part of every check-up, we always look at your child’s teeth from an orthodontic perspective. In the small number of cases where a child would benefit from early intervention, we’ll let you know and talk you through the options.
That said, the majority of cases don’t require treatment until a child has their full set of adult teeth — so in most instances, no action is needed until then. Keeping up with regular check-ups simply means that if early intervention ever is the right call for your child, we won’t miss the window to act on it.
Sleep and airway health in children
It’s less well known that sleep issues and orthodontic development are closely linked. Dr Obaid has a particular interest in this area, and offers assessments for children who may show signs of sleep-disordered breathing — snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, or difficulty concentrating during the day can all be signs worth investigating.
Where relevant, we can guide you toward assessment by an experienced ENT, and Dr Obaid provides both orthopaedic and orthodontic treatment where appropriate. Catching these issues early can make a meaningful difference to a child’s overall health and development, not just their smile.
What to expect at your child’s first visit
Your child’s first visit is mainly about helping them feel comfortable and happy at the dentist — building positive associations that will last a lifetime. The appointment usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes, and includes:
- A gentle examination of your child’s teeth
- A polish
- An application of topical fluoride to help protect their teeth
We’ll also talk you through brushing and diet, so you feel confident you’re doing the right things at home between visits.
When should my child have their first check-up?
We generally recommend a child’s first dental visit between the ages of 2 and 3 — assuming parents are already doing the right things at home in terms of brushing and diet. If you have any concerns before then, or your child’s teeth or habits don’t seem quite right, don’t wait — get in touch and we’re happy to take a look sooner.
