Why visit the dentist on a regular basis?

Many people don’t for a variety of reasons: time, work, money and generally life getting in the way.

Here are 5 good reasons to visit a dentist regularly (every 6 months):

  1. Check that your teeth have no cavities. You don’t necessarily have to be in pain to have a cavity and a cavity will not always cause pain but when it does, you may end up needing more than just a simple filling.
  2. Checking the health of your gums. Plaque and tartar (hard build up not removed by a toothbrush) can cause bad breath, tooth discolouration and build to gum problems that can lead to tooth loss (periodontitis). All this is painless till it’s too late.
  3. Oral cancer screening. We always check your soft tissues for oral cancer. People who smoke and drink and are over 40 are at a higher risk.
  4. Maintenance. Certain prostheses, bridges and implants may need regular maintenance. Neglecting this may lead to accelerated deterioration and loss of the affected teeth resulting in emotional and financial pain.
  5. Last but not least, prevention and education. Regular attendance will ensure that you minimise any potential future problems therefor keeping your wallet happy and your emotional well-being intact.
